Results & Slideshow; Seniors Take Shield in Final Year; Some Upsets!

The WSA Community Shield was held Saturday and Sunday, Feb 19-20, at Rivercity Parks in Sand Springs.  The traditional intra-club derby match day featured some of Oklahoma’s premiere teams and the football did not disappoint.  Saturday featured matches between many of WSA’s academy and younger programs, while Sunday featured the high school and older teams.

One of Saturday’s highlight matches featured WSA 00 Boys and WSA Sharks 01 boys in a sea saw battle.  The WSA Sharks and WSA 00’s had battled to a thriller earlier this Fall in the Midwest Labor Day Tournament, and would give an encore performance.  The WSA Sharks battled from behind in an exciting, heart stopping contest.  The final score was 5-4 in favor of the Sharks, who trailed the match at one point 3-neil. Other Community Shield victors on Saturday included WSA 01 Sutton, WSA 03 Boys, WSA 97 Boys Red, WSA 04 Girls, WSA 01 Boys, WSA 98 Girls Blue, WSA 98 Boys, and WSA 00 Girls.  In all matches the older squad held serve.

On Sunday scorelines tightened up and on two occasions penalties were used to decide the winner.  The opening match saw WSA 96 girls struggle to find an equalizer while the 97’s absorbed the pressure protecting their precious 1-goal lead.  The 96’s would finally find the equalizer minutes from time, but would come up short in penalties.  The 95 girls would preserve a one-goal cushion to upend the 94 girls, while the 93 girls would use the same margin, but a scoreline of 2-1, to upend their training buddies, WSA 94 girls.  WSA 94 Boys squeaked past the WSA 95 boys 2-0, while the 96 boys Red defeated the 96 boys blue 5-4 in penalties after the only scoreless draw of the afternoon had to be settled by penalties.  The WSA 98 Girls Red defeated the 97 girls 4-0.

The seniors of the WSA 93 Girls and WSA 93 Boys Red would go out as Community Shield Champions in their final Shield match day of their careers.  Logowear was on sale, teams got in some good pre season prep, and the event overall was deemed another success.  Please enjoy the slideshow of pictures and video captured from the weeekend below.
