Little Rock, AR -- WSA sent five teams to the Capital City Cup in Little Rock, Arkansas on the weekend of October 4th and 5th, and the club had another great tournament showing! WSA 96 boys, WSA 94 boys, WSA 94 girls, WSA 93 boys, and WSA 93 girls all attended the annual event at Burns Park facility in Little Rock.
All of the teams played some fine football, and three were rewarded by advancing in the event.
The WSA 94 girls advanced to the semifinal stage after outscoring opponents 9 to 1 in the first round of the tournament. The girls ran into a tough Cosmos team in the semifinal stage and dropped the match 2-1. Coaches Josh McElroy and Dustyn Hall were pleased with the team's early round performances. The girls will face Cosmos in the next week in Oklahoma Premiere League play and are hoping for a different result.
WSA 94 boys were set on defending their 2007 Capital City Cup championship title. The squad found the early rounds of the tournament a struggle to score goals in spite of some dominant play. The goals finally started to unfold in the semifinal stage as the team scored an early goal against ESC 94 that would lead to a 3-1 victory and a second consecutive trip to the Capital City Cup Championship finals. Sweeper Jacob Ishee and stand-in/back-up goalkeeper Jacob Bulman turned in outstanding performances all weekend for the squad. WSA 94 boys though would also run into a tough Cosmos squad in the Championship Final and would drop the match 3-0 to take home the runner-up prize. The 94 boys are coached by Barry Bulman and Roger Bush.
The WSA 93 boys, coached by Justin Phillips and Emo Griffin, continued to impress and roll in the early rounds of the tournament storming through the first round including another win over TSC 93 White. WSA 93 took a 12 game winning streak into the tournament and put an undefeated 2008 record on the line. WSA 93 would face Tulsa Nationals 93 in the semifinal stage and would win easily by a scoreline of 3-1 to extend their win streak. This pitted WSA 93 against the top ranked 93 boys team in Arkansas, Little Rock FC. The host and home squad proved a formidable opponent, but it wasn't until the 2nd period of overtime in the dying moments that LRFC could sneak past the winner and become the first team to defeat WSA 93 boys in 14 matches this season. It marked the third consecutive championship final for WSA 93 boys, third consecutive trophy on the season and another great tournament outing for this upstart team.
The WSA 93 girls and WSA 96 boys also had great showings in the tournament, but the 96 boys were edged out of the finals in the first round, while the 93 girls played the touranment champions ESC 93 to within a goal in the first round, but continued to find goalscoring difficult in their other matches.
Congratulations to all teams on great performances and for representing your soccer community with class and pride!
Large Turnout For College Seminar Night
Five Colleges Represented
Over 100 players and parents showed up on Monday, October 13th for the Annual WSA College Seminar night. The two part meeting included a presentation of everything from collegiate recruiting rules and eligibility requirements to methods of promoting one's self to college coaches, to what it takes to play at "the next level".

The event was highlighted by a coaches panel that included Coach Cussen, the Head Women's Coach at the University of Tulsa, Coach Brent Coates, the Head Men's and Women's Coach at Oklahoma Baptist University, Coach Derek Larking, the Head Men's and Women's Coach at Roger's State College, Coach Bobby Peterson, the Head Men's Coach at Northeastern State University, and Coach Ryan Bush, the Head Women's Coach at Oral Robert's University.

Questions from the WSA athletes ranged from "What do coaches look for when scouting players?", to "What is expected in the offseason program?". The coaches panel provided insight into the recruiting process, dispelled some myths about college athletic scholarships, and provided some humorous anecdotes as they responded to questions from the parents and players. Coach Larkin (RSU) summed things up in responding to a question about what is important to do to get the attention of college scouts, "Grades and a demonstration of committment in the classroom are important to us as coaches. We want to know we are getting a good athlete and a good all around individual."

WSA college showcase eligible teams will have individualized meetings with Director of Coaching Roger Bush and Assistant Director of Coaching Ryan Bush in the coming weeks to go over individualized action plans for the college search process.

The tremendous turnout for the seminar was representative of a club program that currenlty has over 90 prospective collegiate athletes in grades 9 thru 12. Last year WSA had 15 athletes sign "letters of intent" to play college soccer, and traditionally has sent numerous players on to succesful collegiate careers. Based on the interest shown on Monday the tradition is likely to continue.
