 NIKE SPARQ TESTING COMPLETE
2011 Winter Sparq Champions Ricky Jones (94 Boys) and Madison Carey (93 Girls)

On March 6th, Rivercity Parks hosted the 3rd Annual Nike Sparq Combine testing.  Twenty-six brave souls showed up to complete the battery of nine tests and some very impressive results were turned in.

Every athlete completed nine tests including laser timed speed tests, strength tests, core tests, aerobic capacity tests, agility tests, and vertical leap and explosion tests.  The tests are commonly used at college programs and at the professional ranks.  "Some of these tests are administrated in the exact manner as they would be on the grounds of Arsenal, Man United or Barcelona," reported WSA Director of Coaching, Roger Bush.  And no disclaimer is granted to any athlete showing up for their age or level -- all athletes test in the standardized environment and are scored by a standard for college freshman in the United States.   That included Zach Williams, 11 years old, member of the WSA 00’s who claimed a level 11 on the Beep Test this year, one stage higher than he advanced last year.  That mark is passing for a college freshman.  "No exceptions were made for Zach.  He’s fit.  It’s why he helps contribute to his team’s midfield prowess," reported Bush.  Other high marks were turned in as well. WSA 94 player Brian Santiago recorded one of the best vertical leaps in the combine’s history, while teammate Mike Parsons and Santiago set the standard for the strength test, and Mikey one of the club’s quickest players turned in a speedy 20 yard test.

The overall composite scores were determined by taking the average of the 9 tests’ converted scores.  The converted score represents a baseline whereby 60 is passing, 80 is exceptional, and less than 60 requires improvement.  Ricky Jones, WSA 94 boys, and Madison Carey, WSA 93 girls both claimed the Nike Sparq Champions honors with scores of 64.00 and 66.11 respectively.

WSA will offer another testing date for early June.  This will also coincide with offering a "Training Insanity" summer workout program targeted at improving strength, conditioning, agility, and power in athletes.  More info on this session will be posted under Camps on this website.

Well done to all athletes participating.  Bush points out that the players showing up are to be commended for their efforts and foremost their dedication. Many are high school athletes competing in two seasons right now, and to dedicate an "off day" to continued training, benchmarking, and improvement speaks volume about the character and drive of the athletes.
