WSA CONCUSSION MANAGEMENT PROGRAM CUTTING EDGE
Partnership with SWAY Medical & OU Sports Medicine

WSA Soccer has partnered with OU Sports Medicine and Sway Medical, to put WSA on the cutting edge of concussion management programming in youth sports.
Hundreds of athletes turned out on Wednesday evening at the OU-Tulsa Learning Center, to listen to a 20 minute presentation on concussion management, presented by leading experts in the field, Dr Kern, Dr Cavanagh, and Dr Sherburn.  WSA resident expert and physical therapist, Holly Thompson, helped coordinate the night's activities which saw several hundred WSA players baseline tested using the Sway Medical device.   Coaches and team administrators were taught how to administer the test, and each team generated a team account that allows coach and team admin access to the data throughout the year.

Frank Wolfe, one of the leading developers of the Sway Medical device was also on hand.  Sway is a test of balance, reaction, and vestibular function that can all be executed from an I-phone device.  It is a great and easy tool for assessing the possiblity of a concussion.  However, players and parents were told by the medical professionals that it is not a diagnositc tool, simply a method to facilitate information.

All WSA players are required to complete the baseline testing, and to view the informational seminar in order to be officially rostered on their team at WSA.  WSA will contribute the proceeds of tonight's event, in cooperation with OU Sports Medicine, to a concussion research endeavor entitled "How To Improve Safety of Players in Return to Play Protocol Post Concussion".   Thank you to all WSA'ers who participated and contribute to this ongoing education and awareness effort!

Any players missing the June test will have multiple opportunities to make up the test during July.  Please check the WSA website for details.

The WSA Concussion management program is outlined in the club's PLAYER RESOURCE CENTER under MEDICAL PROGRAM.  You can access more information about one of Oklahoma's most comprehensive player programs by clicking the Medical and Athletic Training program icon below.
